EIGE has met leading gender equality experts, policy-makers and statisticians from Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, MaltaSlovenia and Romania.

The aim of the meeting has been to present the conceptual framework and preliminary results of the Gender Equality Index and discuss its benefits and possible use before it is officially launched on 13 June 2013. The Gender Equality Index is a unique measurement tool that synthesizes the complexity of gender equality as a multi-dimensional concept into a user-friendly and easily interpretable measure. It is formed by combining gender indicators, according to a conceptual framework, into a single summary measure. It consists of six core domains, including “knowledge” referring to gender differences in education and training.

EIGE constructed the Index so that it becomes the European Union’s key tool to assess the extent of equality between women and men within the Member States and the effectiveness of the EU policies within this area
